About Kershaw Knives
Pete Kershaw was an avid outdoorsman, and like any true enthusiast, he understood the value of reliable hunting and fishing tools. This led him to start Kershaw Knives in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 1974, with the goal of producing top-quality hunting knives.
In his search for a manufacturing partner to bring his knife designs to life, Pete teamed up with KAI, a Japanese company with a long history of crafting fine blades.
The partnership, now spanning approximately five decades, has allowed Kershaw to blend American ingenuity with Japanese craftsmanship to create a wide range of high-quality, durable knives. While Kershaw initially focused on hunting knives, the brand has since expanded its product line to include everyday carry (EDC) knives, tactical tools, and outdoor survival gear.
Today, Kershaw continues to push the boundaries of knife design and technology at its Tualatin, Oregon facility, while staying true to the high standards Pete Kershaw set when the company was founded.

What brand of knives do Navy SEALs use?

What are Kershaw automatic knives?
An automatic knife—also known as a switchblade—is a type of knife that opens with the push of a button or switch. The blade deploys quickly and smoothly, thanks to a spring-loaded mechanism housed within the handle.
Kershaw automatic knives are popular for their reliable and rapid one-handed opening, making them ideal for EDC, tactical, and military use.
Among Kershaw's most popular automatic knife lines are:
Kershaw Launch series

This Kershaw automatic knife combines power with everyday practicality. Here's what sets it apart:
-
Premium blade steel: Made from durable stainless steel—CPM MagnaCut for newer models and CPM 20CV for older models—perfect for tough tasks and precision cutting.
-
Out-the-front (OTF) design: Has an OTF mechanism that allows for quick blade deployment with just a slide of the switch.

-

How are OTF knives different from regular automatic knives?
The key difference lies in how the blade deploys.
-
Blade deployment: Regular automatic knives often have a side-opening blade, while OTF knives push the blade straight out from the handle.
-
Speed and access: OTF knives offer faster and more direct access to the blade, making them a popular choice for tactical and self-defense applications.
-
Dual-action mechanisms: Many OTF knives have dual-action mechanisms that allow for both opening and closing the blade with a single button press, providing added convenience and speed.
What are Kershaw OTF knives?
Kershaw OTF knives are made especially for those who demand speed and precision in their automatic knives. The innovative automatic opening mechanism provides lightning-fast blade deployment with a simple push of a button, making these OTFs ideal for tactical professionals, emergency responders, or knife enthusiasts looking for a dependable EDC option.
The compact size of many models ensures portability while offering the strength and durability necessary for tough tasks.
Key features of Kershaw OTF knives include:
-
Ready for immediate use: Designed to ship quickly and be site-ready, these knives are built to perform right out of the box.
-
Strong and durable: Crafted from high-performance blade steels like CPM MagnaCut or CPM 20CV, they ensure long-lasting edge retention and corrosion resistance.
-
Compact design: Despite their strength, they're lightweight and easy to carry—the perfect companion for everyday use.
-
Lightning-fast deployment: The blades are designed to automatically deploy with a single button press, giving you immediate access in critical situations.
