About Kershaw Knives

Pete Kershaw was an avid outdoorsman, and like any true enthusiast, he understood the value of reliable hunting and fishing tools. This led him to start Kershaw Knives in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 1974, with the goal of producing top-quality hunting knives.

In his search for a manufacturing partner to bring his knife designs to life, Pete teamed up with KAI, a Japanese company with a long history of crafting fine blades.

The partnership, now spanning approximately five decades, has allowed Kershaw to blend American ingenuity with Japanese craftsmanship to create a wide range of high-quality, durable knives. While Kershaw initially focused on hunting knives, the brand has since expanded its product line to include everyday carry (EDC) knives, tactical tools, and outdoor survival gear.

Today, Kershaw continues to push the boundaries of knife design and technology at its Tualatin, Oregon facility, while staying true to the high standards Pete Kershaw set when the company was founded.

Where are Kershaw knives made?

Certain Kershaw knife models are manufactured in the USA, at Kershaw's Tualatin, Oregon facility. Other models, particularly mass market or budget-friendly designs, are produced to Kershaw's exacting standards at their partner facility in China.

The following Kershaw knives are manufactured in the USA:

Is Kershaw a Japanese company?

Kershaw is a subsidiary of KAI USA, the US operating arm of the Japanese conglomerate KAI Group. Although Kershaw Knives is now part of this Japanese-owned company, it was originally established by American outdoorsman Pete Kershaw in Lake Oswego, Oregon in 1974, with a focus on producing high-quality hunting knives.

Is Kershaw made in the USA or China?

Kershaw knives are made both in the US and China.

Where does Kershaw make their knives?

Kershaw produces knives both at their Tualatin, Oregon facility in the USA and at a partner facility in China.

What brand of knives do Navy SEALs use?

The Navy SEALs—known as one of the best fighting forces in the world—use various knife brands depending on their preferences and mission requirements.

SOG and Benchmade knives are commonly associated with military and tactical use, but Kershaw also produces tactical knives that are popular among law enforcement and military personnel.

What are Kershaw automatic knives?

An automatic knife—also known as a switchblade—is a type of knife that opens with the push of a button or switch. The blade deploys quickly and smoothly, thanks to a spring-loaded mechanism housed within the handle.

Kershaw automatic knives are popular for their reliable and rapid one-handed opening, making them ideal for EDC, tactical, and military use.

Among Kershaw's most popular automatic knife lines are:

Kershaw Launch series

Get to know the Kershaw Launch:

  • Made in the USA: Proudly made in Kershaw's Oregon facility, including models like the Launch 1 and the Matt Diskin-designed Kershaw Launch 12.

  • Automatic, one-handed opening: Provides smooth, fast deployment with the push of a button.

  • Premium blade materials: Made from high-performance steels like CPM-MagnaCut and CPM-154, which are known for their edge retention and corrosion resistance.

  • Lightweight, durable handles: Features handles crafted from lightweight, aircraft-grade aluminum, offering both grip and comfort without the added weight.

  • Compact and versatile designs: Available in various sizes, from compact to larger models, to suit individual needs and preferences.

Kershaw Livewire

This Kershaw automatic knife combines power with everyday practicality. Here's what sets it apart:

  • Premium blade steel: Made from durable stainless steel—CPM MagnaCut for newer models and CPM 20CV for older models—perfect for tough tasks and precision cutting.

  • Out-the-front (OTF) design: Has an OTF mechanism that allows for quick blade deployment with just a slide of the switch.

  • EDC readiness: Compact enough for everyday carry but powerful enough to handle various tasks, from slicing through rope to cutting tougher materials.

  • Lightweight but durable handles: Lightweight aluminum handle that offers a secure but comfortable grip.

  • Made in the USA: Crafted at Kershaw's Tualatin, Oregon facility, a reflection of the brand's commitment to quality and precision.

How are OTF knives different from regular automatic knives?

The key difference lies in how the blade deploys.

  • Blade deployment: Regular automatic knives often have a side-opening blade, while OTF knives push the blade straight out from the handle.

  • Speed and access: OTF knives offer faster and more direct access to the blade, making them a popular choice for tactical and self-defense applications.

  • Dual-action mechanisms: Many OTF knives have dual-action mechanisms that allow for both opening and closing the blade with a single button press, providing added convenience and speed.

What are Kershaw OTF knives?

Kershaw OTF knives are made especially for those who demand speed and precision in their automatic knives. The innovative automatic opening mechanism provides lightning-fast blade deployment with a simple push of a button, making these OTFs ideal for tactical professionals, emergency responders, or knife enthusiasts looking for a dependable EDC option.

The compact size of many models ensures portability while offering the strength and durability necessary for tough tasks.

Key features of Kershaw OTF knives include:

  • Ready for immediate use: Designed to ship quickly and be site-ready, these knives are built to perform right out of the box.

  • Strong and durable: Crafted from high-performance blade steels like CPM MagnaCut or CPM 20CV, they ensure long-lasting edge retention and corrosion resistance.

  • Compact design: Despite their strength, they're lightweight and easy to carry—the perfect companion for everyday use.

  • Lightning-fast deployment: The blades are designed to automatically deploy with a single button press, giving you immediate access in critical situations.
