Back in 2016, the employees of TOPS Knives received a challenge to come up with the best hatchet, tomahawk, or ax design. The winning design would be approved, produced, and credited to the designer. The champion of that contest was Lorenzo Espinoza Sr., who happens to be Leo's father. Leo is the President of TOPS Knives and the main designer who approves all external designs. It's no surprise that creativity runs in the family.
The hatchet that won the contest is known as Grandpa's Ax. It is a small hatchet that's perfect for backpackers and minimalist campers because it weighs less than 1.5 pounds. Despite its small size, the weight is concentrated in the head, which makes it well-balanced and ideal for chopping. It's a great tool that can be carried over long distances without adding too much weight to your backpack.
