The blade release action on the Guardian Recon 040 is unbelievably smooth, especially when compared to my Microtech Ultatech. Excellent, quality build. Sturdy feel in your hand. Northwest Knives video was spot on accurate.

I was disappointed that the blade comes off the track quite a lot. If I only use in the down position, this ATF knife does not jump the track.

The Guardian Tactical Recon 040 is a very smooth and large OTF. The 040 seems every bit as stout as a Microtech Combat Troodon. Some people may not like the weight (over 6oz) but It carries well for it’s size. It doesn’t have an obnoxiously large glass breaker on it yet still has one should it be needed. Elmax steel seems to be akin to S45VN with the corrosion resistance and toughness of S35VN and the edge retention of S30V.

This was my first purchase from Northwest Knives as they were literally the only place online that had a Recon 040 in stock and I am not disappointed. I will buy more knives from Northwest Knives in the future!

I put this knife to work the day I got it. It fits to hand extremely well and does everything that I need a tool like this to do. The serrated edges cut webbing, cordage and plastic sheet with no issue. The main cutting edge is a sharp as a razor. The glass breaker, though unobtrusive, works very well and the bit of extra length in the handle keeps the breaker clear of your glove for a clean strike.

The grip on the knife is excellent for all purposes with the face and side jimping well executed and provides good grip in gloved hands as well .

The actuation is everything that it is claimed to be. The larger slider and the ball bearing supported action on the steel plate allows you to apply downward and forward force for sure actuation without any additional friction. It’s head and shoulders above other autos of this ilk that I’ve used. It extends and retracts with a smooth fast authority that is truly impressive and there is zero slider play. Mine has some minor blade play as most all OTFs do, but it has no downside in my use of the knife. I had some issues with the pocket clip, but that’s already being addressed by their excellent customer service folks.

If you’re in the market for a beefy work grade OTF I say look no further.
